Class Prompt: Cover Dialogue
Oct. 23rd, 2011 05:40 pmI don't think this fits the assignment as well as it could have, but I also think the assignment was kind of stupid. It's supposed to be a dialogue in which the characters are talking, but skirting the real issue in favor of things more trivial. Originally only dialogue, then we were asked to revise it and add character movements and behaviors. There was one guy who read his in class, and I thought it was great because it was symptomatic of deeper problems in the friendship he wrote, so I kind of tried to do that here. It's Neil's focus on his job, and Jack's contempt for Neil's focus on his job, and also the inclination to take each other for granted, because they're so comfortable with each other.

I don't think I'm going to use this one, because I can't seem to get the voices right. They're thing they'd say, but neither character has any dialogue style. Like, Kai has a very distinct way of speaking, even without the stutter. So does Nyali, and Tsuya, and Tanwen. Neil and Jack ... right now, they're amorphous and indistinct, now that I've actually started to think about characters' speech patterns. So I'm going to redo this exercise, but I like the idea that they have conversations like this.

About This Story
D'Sezan is a city in a country not unlike England in climate and advancement, although it's probably around 2000 as far as technology is concerned. In this world, magic takes the form of ghostly 'alma' that enter the soul anywhere between the ages of five and fifteen, give or take a few years, bestowing upon the recipient magical gifts. These gifts are dependent upon the natural inclination of the particular alma, and the temperament of the person in whom they reside.
