I was listening to "Orange Sky" by Alexei Murdoch, and I wanted to write something, and then I realized it's basically the perfect song for the Novel. And I wanted to write something for it, but I've got to actually pick up where I left off, so in the meantime, I did a doodle from the happy alternate universe where Taran gets to the capital city in time and no one dies except for Siaras.

Taran falls asleep on the floor of the palace, with mud matting his hair, too exhausted to take notice. Beside him, he can feel Neirin, sitting close, his back against the wall. Tanwen walks past as Taran is drifting off to sleep, stops to murmur to Neirin in a low voice. Neirin responds in the same tone. In the warm, fuzzy haze preceding sleep, Taran is dimly pleased by the sound of his voice. He reaches out a hand from where it is curled against his chest, reaches out until he catches the fabric of Neirin’s clothing. A hand comes to rest on his shoulder, fingers curled, and Taran hums to himself before a final wave of exhaustion sinks into his bones, and sleep envelopes him.

Or maybe this is the part after he is mortally wounded defeating Siaras, and he doesn't wake up after this ... I think the sentiment would still be the same.

It's been way too long since I wrote anything for this story.

I have mixed feelings about Imagine Your OTP. Half of it is so specific and scripted it's sort of dumb, and a quarter of it is embarrassingly awful things that makes me cringe, and out of the other quarter, one in every three is the right combination of vague enough and incredibly saccharine enough for me to be able to use for flash fiction. However, that quarter is still fun. So here are some:

Title this time courtesy of Radical Face. The Family Tree: The Roots is more or less the soundtrack for the Sisawain family, only with less suicide. I also need to pay extra attention to the less-central family members, because they're still important to the functioning of the group.

Mairwen and Kieve might have accidentally swapped issues in this draft. Since Mairwen is more important to the story, I'm more than okay with this.

I'm typing this up because my notebook isn't working for me these days, and I need to keep writing this. And if silly chapter titles are what it takes to make me feel better about posting a draft online, then so be it: silly chapter titles it is. Cheesy song lyrics everywhere!

I wrote this whilst working on my geoscience paper. Tanwen, Mairwen, and Kieve goofing around, with bonus Rhys. 1,026 words.

I actually really like most of this. Obviously the writing needs polishing, and parts need expansion, and I really need to quit adverbs cold turkey before they consume my soul like I'm fourteen years old again, but here it is.

NOTE TO FUTURE SELF: THIS IS THE PART WHERE YOU PUT THE COMMENTARY ABOUT CHAPTER DIVISIONS AND SAMBIYA AS A POV CHARACTER.

The downside of writing everything directly as a stream of consciousness, including when things are and aren't working and what things need to be changed, is that if I don't remember the context of the scene I interrupted to make that note, I'll have no idea where to find it. And once it's on paper, it is no longer in my head, so this is a problem. But to continue:

My Pen Is Dying And I Was Short On Word Count )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't care anymore! I've realized that even at my best, this is still only a rough draft, and very little of it will ever see the light of day once revision has taken over. So I've stopped trying so hard to make it a good rough draft, and focused more on the primary objective: get everything down, even if it's only in semi-prose form, as quickly as possible before I forget.
Typed Story Snippet )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm at this fantastic stage of the story where suddenly, things started happening, and I realized that if I nudge them just a little in this direction, everything suddenly clicks into high gear and I have a plot to hold up the character interactions of Tanwen's side of things (and really, all I ever ask for in life is to be able to write stories about characters who don't get along, getting along) that starts as a plot on Meilen/Tsuya's side of things, and then crosses over into Oboureon, and it all fits together and is an interesting dilemma that will involve both lots of action and lots of dialogue and thinking.

Also after everything is done I am going to hide in my room and read aloud every single conversation and rewrite it so that it sounds like normal human speech and not me reading off a speech.

Another Snippet )

I have so many Wicked-induced feelings right now it isn't even funny. It's tragic. I'm all muddled up inside like an impressionist watercolor dunked in a bucket of fish.

EDIT 02.06.12: I was going back through old entries to find something, and I would just like to make it clear that I have no idea what I meant by a bucket of fish. None.

I'm determined to write something every day, but yesterday I was in a fuzzy haze of packing and Japanese verbs, so I didn't get a chance to work on my story proper. So I wrote this before I went to bed, because this is what I'm most excited about writing in Tsuya's storyline:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tsuya can’t imagine a life that doesn’t have Nyali in it, and maybe that’s the problem. If it is a problem. Because it’s like Sambiya says: if he’s alive, he’s bailed on you. If he’s dead, you’re sitting around waiting in a rescue that ain’t coming. Tsuya looks at his two options, and he doesn’t know which one is worse. He knows that the right thing to want, the nice thing to want, I for Nyali to be alive, having deserted him. But Tsuya isn’t a nice person – people remind him daily of this fact – and he hopes that his brother is dead so that he will have died still loving him. And then he feels like a cockroach for even thinking that, and quickly changes his mind because the thought of there being no Nyali in the world at all opens up a gaping abyss in his chest that he doesn’t want to deal with ever -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's true - I realized that of my main characters, Meilen is probably the nicest. And when the nicest character is an abusive older sister ... well, there are low standards. It's a funny revelation because until I wrote that, I was thinking that all four of them are pretty good people. And then, looking back on it ... no, not really. Tanwen is manipulative, and she only does nice things for people who aren't family because it'll make her look good. Nyali is shamelessly power-hungry and he's the sort of clever where he knows that he's smarter than most other people, and lets it get to his head. Tsuya is a misogynistic, xenophobic, racist brat, and Meilen is verbally abusive to Tsuya and also xenophobic. But they all see themselves as good, noble, people who do things the right way, and I write them in first-person, so it's a little difficult to separate that at time.
