Some background information on the characters, so that the drabbles will make some sort of sense.

About This Story
D'Sezan is a city in a country not unlike England in climate and advancement, although it's probably around 2000 as far as technology is concerned. In this world, magic takes the form of ghostly 'alma' that enter the soul anywhere between the ages of five and fifteen, give or take a few years, bestowing upon the recipient magical gifts. These gifts are dependent upon the natural inclination of the particular alma, and the temperament of the person in whom they reside.

Quentin Galligan
A shapeshifting man in his thirties, who hails from the city-state of Lenore, neighboring D'Sezan. He is a Knight Templar, bent on making everyone equal — and, of course, he is the only one smart enough to be able to achieve this end. His powers are the ability to change his appearance at will, although all have the same small tattoo on the back of the neck. He spends a good deal of his time as a woman.

Stephen Semprevivo
Early thirties, broad-shouldered and muscular. He is obsessed with the American idea of a superhero, and tends towards the Don Quixote brand of crazy. His coworkers find him incredibly irritating for all of his grandstanding, but he's a very insecure person underneath. He had a Naienshm grandmother, which would explain his ability to breathe fire and fly — without the shape shifting.

Reed Henry
Calm, collected, in Stephen's graduating class and his only close friend. She heads the department of Quark on which the story focuses. She enjoys sitcoms more than she will admit to anyone, and does, despite appearances, have strong emotions. Reed is clairvoyant, with perfect visual recall, and the ability to 'send' and 'receive' mental pictures. This ability is enhanced by an organic diet, and practically useless without.

Evangeline Frost
The fighter. She can pick up any weapon and instantly be able to use it, for as long as her skin is touching it. She's also incredibly fast, and trained for years in full-contact martial arts. On the personal side of things, she's even more irritating than Stephen, as she thinks she's irresistible to any man (admittedly, she is very pretty). Even when that man is currently taken. Despite her flaws and simpering, she is unquestioningly loyal to her team and will sacrifice herself to save anyone she deems a good person.

Karthik Rau
The next most senior member of the team. He prefers to keep his work totally separate from the rest of his life, and while his coworkers know that he's brave and dedicated, that's really all they do know. He lives with an elderly woman, Julia Knight, who has dementia and needs full-time care. When he's at work, he trades it off with his friend, Raz. Karthik is able to touch any inanimate object and know where it has been, and when, which is useful when finding things. He is also blind, and has a seeing-eye parrot named Feathered Justice.

Neil Glass
Mid-twenties, part-time art teacher at an elementary school in town. He isn't terribly good at teaching, but he likes doing it anyway, and paints in his spare time. He shares his apartment with a cat named Percy, and sometimes with Jack. He can paint onto the air with his hands, and whatever he paints comes to life for a short amount of time, but he requires cranberry juice to work.

Alan Black
The newest member. He is a borderline sociopath, which bothers him a lot. His talent lies in being able to literally see how people's thought processes work, both the conscious and the subconscious, like a 3-D schematic in his head. This ability is restricted if he wears hemp, and for this reason he usually has a hemp bracelet on around his friends and other Quark members. Has the potential to be a force for good or evil.

Jack Craven
Changed his name from John Crowe, son of millionaire executives, after they disowned him when he was sixteen. The disowning came about because he's gay, and his parents found out without him telling them. (They belong to a particularly bizarre minor religion where this is unacceptable.) He worked as a waiter to finish high school, and then joined the Academy because it's a free education, only problem being you have to join Quark after, like the military. He is the animal man: the finger pads of a gecko, the scent of a bloodhound, and the metabolism of a hummingbird.

Clark Masters
The oldest character by about twenty years. CEO of the largest electric company in Trezam, the world where D'Sezan is. A bit of an environmentalist nut, married his high school girlfriend, but everyone assumes she's just a trophy wife because she looks very young and beautiful. He's a retired vigilante criminal, sort of an anti-Quark, but keeps up with the business side of things. His power is fire-setting, but his fires can only be put out with alcohol or oil, and can only be set on damp objects.

Feathered Justice
Karthik's Seeing Eye Parrot. She can imitate any sound she hears, no matter how high or low it is. She is a sort of feathered counterpart to Stephen Semprevivo vis a vis her work ethic, which is insane. She's paranoid, and overprotective of Karthik, and has a very good sense of who to trust. (She hates Alan, for example.) She is also protective of anyone Karthik values, like Mrs. Knight.
