things and thoughts

Confession: I love fanmixes. My usual mode of music consumption goes something like this:
1. Discover new artist/song/album
2. Download
3. Create playlist to complement new music
4. Listen to nothing else (duration: 3 days - 3 months)
5. Get bored; 'new music' becomes 'old music'
6. Repeat
And then I discovered fanmixes. Which are all music that's by different artists, but they revolve around a similar theme, so it's like combining the first three steps. It's fantastic. The downside is that then the songs get linked in my mental binder, but they're not conveniently linked in my ipod, so there's an awful lot of shuffling and rearranging that I have to do. But still, awesome!
The problem, then, is finding a mix made by someone whose musical tastes I like.
(There's also the challenge of finding a fanmix that doesn't include either Florence + the Machine or Mumford and Sons. It's surprisingly difficult, which is stupid.)
So basically the point of this post is to expostulate about my love of some of the mixes. I now have an awesome collection of creepy songs about unhealthy relationships, which are the best type of song. Among other things, obviously. I discovered that non-shippy Supernatural fanmixes are more likely to contain the type of songs that I like (sadly, this had a significant amount of influence on my decision to actually watch the show ... I liked the way that they sounded) and that there is some truly bizarre, beautiful music out there. (M83? Fuck yeah!)
I think this might be turning me into a hipster, though. In my travails through the fanmix tumblr, I feel like I've stumbled into a different part of town - like walking around Union Square, and then taking a wrong turn, and suddenly you're on west 18th! And you never knew that 18th street existed! I'm not explaining this very well. I don't pay much attention to the music 'scene' anymore, but when I did, there were definitely circles. I spent high school in the teenage angst circle: MCR, blink-182, Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, We the Kings, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, etc. You know the type, right? Then in the Japanese metal circle, which I'm not going to bother explaining because it's nutty and irrelevant. And now I've discovered this new circle of music that I never knew existed: the Editors, Regina Spektor, Florence + the Machine, Mumford and Sons, The New Pornographers, etc. It's so interesting.
Anyway. Good things happening, despite imminent hipster threshold about to be reached. I'm eating dinner with other human beings tonight, which is nice, and I'm going to go get frozen yoghurt with a friend and her friends tomorrow.
Oh yeah! The whole music thing is analogous to my experience with making friends this semester. My previous two experiences with making friends has been meeting one group of people and sticking with that group, and they're a group, so we were all grouped together in my head. And now, the people I'm making friends with, I'm making friends with individuals on my own merits, and I can be selective because again, it's an individual, not someone I have to make friends with because we're hanging out with mutual friends. So I'm able to pick and choose and find people who make me happy. It's a different experience. I think it's rewarding. Still looking for a 'best friend' but I'm feeling generally positive about the way that things are going: slowly, but functional.
And lastly, origami is my new thing to do while watching television or reading on my computer, and I bought a three-pack of moleskine notebooks because they were 50% off at my school store. They're gorgeous. Moleskine notebooks are to me like shoes are to some women (my best friend from high school). I'll probably use them for NaNoWriMo, or as general-purpose "doodle" notebooks when I fill up my current one.
SO MUCH AWESOME FUCKED-UP MUSIC IN MY EEEEEEEEEARS.
