Day 05 – A book that makes you happy

There are a lot of books that could fall under this category, but I'm going to go with a self-published one: Nameless by Sam Starbuck. If I'm feeling down and I want to read something that will make me happy, this is my go-to book above anything else (except for this one meta Merlin fic that can have me in stitches even after repeated readings, but fanfiction is not the focus of this meme). It’s like nothing else I usually read, and it’s so adorable and sweet and understated. That actually surprised me when I first read it, because I found the author through his fanfiction ... which is, usually, the opposite of understated. The way that he portrays a small-town atmosphere is wonderful, with the traditions and backwater feel; it was the first time, when reading something, that I understood how it was possible to give the reader a sense of place and time through action and interaction, rather than description. This story is basically the opposite of the story above: very little plot, all about the characters, nothing particularly tense about it, though that's not to say it's not engaging, because it is. The first time I found it, I read it all in one sitting. I like the gradual settling-in that Christopher goes through, I liked that he was a bookkeeper, and, of course, I adored Lucas, who breaks my heart in the best way possible. It’s a remarkably feel-good story for something that gets so serious at times; all of the scenes between Lucas and Christopher fill me with warm fuzzies. Also, I relate far too much to Lucas so there's the wish-fulfillment aspect of enjoying the book ...

I just recolored this page, and I'm very pleased with myself. I also learned how to make those little puffy paper stars. Also I am thinking about doing this meme with fanfiction because I read a shitload more of that than I'm comfortable admitting to, hahaha. It's easier to access.
