Shanrien society is matriarchal. Lineage passes from mother to daughter, which is why Tanwen is so important. It also could be a contributing factor for her sister’s desire to be a woman, as it would put her in line for the throne, but seeing as she would never be able to bear a daughter anyway, lineage would still pass from Tanwen’s sister to Tanwen’s daughter if she had had one before her sister died.

Men still fight, but they are the ones who do the grunt work; women are military strategists with male advisors who have firsthand experience. Cooking is a shared duty, as is farming. I should clarify this: the distinction is made particularly among the elite, and the further along the line it goes down to utilitarian tasks, the less strictly the division between the genders is made by society, however, tasks are traditionally hereditary.

As far as different sexualities and genders: in this world, transsexualism is its own separate niche, but the lack of gender differentiation means that it’s less important to people. They don’t have equivalent words for it, they have their own, which aren’t relevant to the story. Shanrien society is cool with same-sex partnerships, which are understood differently than marriage. It’s understood among the common people as meaning that two women or two men have formed such a close friendship that marrying someone else would detract from this friendship. It’s not seen as sexual, even though a lot of partnerships are in practice if not in theory. But it’s not common. Aisegetoa and Reiesamon are so scandalous and fascinating to the public because they flaunted their relationship as being a romantic one and wrote love letters to each other that got snagged and read by Aisa's brother with the bad blood between them.

I love Reian, Aisa, and Marat. I'm going to make them into their own story after this, but probably far, far shorter.
