100 Drabbles #14, #15, and #16
Prompt: Mow
POV Character: Evangeline
Date: Year 379
Summary: Evangeline as a battle queen?
'I feel like Kill Bill,' Evangeline announces as she throws open the doors to the Palace of Doom for her teammates.
'No kidding,' says Jacoby, staring at her blood-spattered clothing and the weapons she holds: gun in one hand, carving knife in the other. Behind her, the room and hall are littered with dead bodies and limbs like leaves in autumn. All of the various weapons which those bodies had lately possessed had been piled neatly against one wall. 'How many was that?'
'Forty-two,' she admits, sounding slightly disappointed. 'It's not as dramatic. Come on, we have men to seduce.'
Prompt: Wedding
POV Character: Karthik
Date: None
Summary: Foreign weddings
Until he was well into high school, Karthik's predominant ideas concerning weddings were hazy recollections of the Dumisani wedding that his parents had attended when he was seven. Lots of incense, lots of beaded cloth, and a small fur hat from an aunt that made his head hot and itchy. He can't remember any of the specifics; the ceremony took place in the Dumisani language, Taok, of which he spoke little except for a few set phrases. Once he had occasion to attend one, Trezanian weddings seemed exotic, with blue suits and green dresses and not a bead in sight.
Prompt: Umbrella
POV Character: Neil
Date: Spring, year 378
Summary: Neil Learns A Lesson
'How did you not realize that inviting a girl to walk with you in the rain is tantamount to a date?' asked Jack, snickering.
'I assume everyone thinks I'm an amoeba,' Neil confessed, stroking the cat sleeping on his lap. 'And then I went to drop her off at her apartment, because it was on the way, you idiot, and she — she,' — He waves his hands around in the air and points to his mouth, and buries his face in Percy's fur.
'I suppose you know the lesson here …'
'Yes,' came Neil's muffled voice. 'Leave the umbrella at home.'
(Favorite for this set is Neil's. I think Karthik's is a bit lackluster, and Evangeline's is too complicated. I sugarcoat her too much.)
